Hull UK Online

Hull college developed the UK online project to establish centres to provide access to ICT to people living in disadvantaged areas in the city.  Many of these residents cannot afford to buy computers and would not otherwise have had training opportunities and the chance to learn new skills and qualifications to help them find jobs.  The ICT suites have been fitted out with internet connection and many software learning packages.  The funding of IT trainer posts means that training takes place both during the day and in the evenings to meet the diverse needs of residents.

The project provides courses for those with no skills or experience and also those wishing to update and develop their existing qualifications.  These courses vary across sites and include IT tasters, basic computers, CLAIT, internet and e-mail, digital photography and web design.

UK online also provides online support with employment services and training courses for participants aiming to move on into employment.

To date the project has assisted 21 ICT initiatives, 29 networks and 37 Organisations.  It has also created 17 jobs (FTE) and accommodated the equivalent of 17.5 jobs. UK online has helped over 40 local residents into employment and over 2,000 people have been able to access ICT.
