The project received £750,000 of European Regional Development Funding to re-develop the training and resource centre and also fund a Community Enterprise worker to work with the local community and organisation in the Newsome area of Kirklees. The centre, which is the only one of its kind in West Yorkshire, incorporates a host of green initiatives including a turf roof, wind turbine, solar wall, rainwater harvesting plant, natural wastewater treatment system and passive ventilation system. The building operates as an outreach centre for the College into the Newsome ward, enabling taster courses to be provided in the local area attracting residents back into training. A key part of the project employs a community economic development worker and administrator to work with the community to identify training needs and co-ordinate events with special attention paid to the environmental and horticultural sectors. The project has provided 900m2 of premises using ERDF on land already developed, assisted 2 ICT initiatives, assisted 3 Environmental Initiatives, assisted 6 organisations, created 4 new jobs and helped 40 people access ICT. |
