New Business Centre for Wakefield
The Cedars Business Centre in Hemsworth, located in the south east of the district, was officially opened in January 2006 and provides modern Office facilities for 28 new and developing companies, targeted in particular at firms in the IT sector and other high tech industries.
Business support and guidance is available on site and the development has a Sure Start service next door, providing child support and child care provision.
The centre features innovative translucent walls made of Kalwall, a new building material with insulating properties four times that of glass.
Councillor Phil Dobson, deputy leader of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "This is a significant development. It is the first step on the ladder of building a knowledge based economy in the south east of the district."
Funding for the centre was over £2 million and it came from the government's Single Regeneration Budget, the European Regional Development Fund, Yorkshire Forward, the Coalfield Regeneration Trust and Wakefield Metropolitan District Council.
